Wacker Neuson continuously improves its product range and offers its customers innovative solutions. One of these solutions is the use of HVO fuels. This allows construction site operators to significantly reduce their carbon footprint with Wacker Neuson construction machines and equipment. But what exactly is HVO? What are its benefits? And where can you refuel with HVO? You can find out more here.
What are HVO fuels?
HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oils and is a synthetic diesel fuel, manufactured from renewable raw materials, like plant-based oils and animal fats. HVO can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90 percent when compared with diesel fossil fuel. HVO has characteristics similar to those of diesel and fulfills the same standards as traditional diesel. With the use of HVO fuels, construction site operators can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their construction site and make it more sustainable.

What are the benefits of using HVO in your construction machines?
HVO fuels have many benefits when compared with traditional diesel, both for the environment and the engine. Here are some of the benefits:
-
- HVO fuels are climate-neutral, as they only release as much CO2 as the plants have previously absorbed. This means that they do not present an additional contribution to the greenhouse effect.
- HVO fuels are bio-degradable and do not contain any sulfur or nitric oxide. In the event of a leak or an accident, there are no damaging effects to the environment, and they are easy to dispose of.
- HVO fuels are manufactured using different, locally available raw materials, such as cooking oil, animal fat, and waste wood. This means that they are independent of the global oil prices and they support the regional economy.
- They burn cleaner, which means less particulate matter and nitric oxide emissions, and they generate fewer deposits. This can lead to better engine performance.
- They are odorless and can be stored for several years.
By the way: In use, it is possible to see that HVO fuels do not hurt the service life, the maintenance intervals, or the emission behavior of the engine.
Where can you refuel with HVO?
In many countries throughout Europe, HVO has been available at fuel stations for several years. In May 2024, the legislature in Germany approved HVO for sale. Since then, HVO has become available at more and more German fuel stations and can be recognized by the acronym XTL (“X to Liquid”). There you can get the HVO fuel in its pure form by the DIN 15940 standard.
Important: HVO should not be confused with biodiesel. Biodiesel is also available at fuel stations, known by the abbreviation B10. However, biodiesel is fundamentally different from HVO in terms of the processing of the raw materials.
Welche Wacker Neuson Maschinen sind HVO-kompatibel?
Which Wacker Neuson machines are HVO-compatible?
All Wacker Neuson construction equipment and machines with Stage 5 diesel engines are approved for HVO fuels in accordance with EN15940, like excavators, dumpers, wheel loaders, and telehandlers as well as vibratory plates, rammers, and rollers.
Almost all Wacker Neuson machines since September 2024 are initially fueled with HVO ex works. As a forward-thinking pioneer, Wacker Neuson is taking a consistent step towards a sustainable future and encourages its customers to take this path as well.
