In the center of Munich is one of the largest construction sites within the city: Here, over the coming years, a new mobility turntable will be built with the second S-Bahn line, new reception building and the shell for a new underground line. Large parts of the old building complex have already been demolished.
Necessary preparations are currently being made, included herein are the reinforcements of old foundations through the installation of a pile head beam. All works are currently being performed during regular station operation.
The construction company performing the works is ZECH Bau SE. They have hired all zero emission construction machines and equipment for this construction section. Christian Eineichner, Construction Management Representative of ZECH Bau SE, says: “As we are in the basement, we must work both cleanly and efficiently. In addition to this, we don’t have a lot of space and have to adapt to the local conditions. As a result, the electric construction machines and equipment from Wacker Neuson provide valuable services. We are familiar with Wacker Neuson products from previous construction projects. For that reason, we did not hesitate and once again requested the e-models from Wacker Neuson for the Munich train station.”
“The overall package simply fits: starting with the products’ performance, through user-friendliness to the price.”

Passangers to the Munich train station are not even aware of what is happening almost immediately below their feet: Trenches are being dug out, walls are being demolished, materials is being transported, and the ground is being compacted. In doing so, it is almost exclusively electric construction machines and equipment from the Wacker Neuson zero emission range in use. As no direct emissions are emitted, the need for an expensive and elaborate ventilation system is eliminated, which would otherwise be required in tunnel construction. Another benefit: Noise emissions are reduced to a minimum. This generates a significantly more pleasant working environment for the operators and workers. And passersby barely notice the construction site.
Electrical solutions fulfill all requirements
Two battery-electrically powered mini-excavators, EZ17e, are in constant use at the Munich train station for demolition works and material excavation under the train station hall, and that is completely free from emissions with little noise. The battery-electric telehandlers TH412e and battery-electric wheel loaders WL20e were used for the transportation of material. Due to its compact design, the TH412e is perfect for indoor use. Tight passageways do not pose a problem.
The reversible vibratory plate APU3050e, as well as the battery-powered rammer AS62e were used for ground compaction in trenches. Both are powered by the Battery One battery which can also be switched between products again and again, while providing enough power for the whole working day. In the confined underground construction site of the train station, not only the emission-free drive proved to be useful, but also the push-button start made ground compaction easier for the operator. Martin Trumm, Wacker Neuson zero emissions Advisor, says: “The zero emission range really made sense for the Munich train station.”
“We were able to cover the whole process here with our products: from demolition, through lifting and transporting, to compacting.”

“As a result, customers need not accept output losses at any stage, however they are able to benefit from more work safety and cost savings due to the energy-saving application of the equipment and machines.” All Wacker Neuson zero emission products were impressive in application at the Munich train station. And that was not just as a result of the low noise level and emission-free working manner, but above all as a result of their performance, which was not inferior to the conventionally-powered machines.
